# Analyze renewals

Analyzing subscription renewals is essential for recurring-revenue businesses. It gives visibility into upcoming deadlines and lets you anticipate churn risks (customer cancellation) or, conversely, expansion opportunities (upsell/cross-sell). Fincome's Renewals section offers a clear view of the share of MRR/ARR that will renew over a given period, calculated automatically. You can thus accurately anticipate your future revenue, identify renewal opportunities at a glance, and reduce churn risks by optimizing your retention strategy.

Fincome's **Renewals** tab is accessible via the **Analytics** menu, under **Retention**.

## Types of subscriptions tracked

Fincome tracks all subscriptions reaching the end of their cycle, whatever their type or frequency (monthly, quarterly, annual). Renewal logic is modeled as follows:

* By default, the renewal is anticipated at the end of the subscription's service period. This applies to all subscriptions that have no commitment end date.

**For example, a monthly subscription without commitment will be shown as due for renewal at each month-end.**

* As soon as a subscription actually renews (i.e. a new invoice or period starts), it is automatically moved to the following month.
* It is not possible to view all future months of a non-committed contract in advance. You have to wait for the renewal to happen (i.e. for it not to churn) for Fincome to model that renewal in the following month.
* All renewals shown in past months that were not validated (no new billing period) are considered churns.
* If a later commitment end date is known (for example, a contract with a 12-month commitment even if it is billed monthly), the renewal is modeled at the end of that commitment period, and not at the end of the month.

This allows long-commitment subscriptions or contractually planned renewals to be reflected faithfully.

## Where does the commitment end date come from?

This date has two possible origins: either your billing system sends it to Fincome, or you fill it in yourself. Not all tools expose it, which is why some of your subscriptions have a commitment end date and others don't.

### Sources that send the date automatically

| **Billing source** | **Commitment end date** | **Source field** |
| ---- | ---- | ---- |
| Chargebee | Yes | `contract_term.contract_end` |
| Hyperline | Yes | `contract_end` |
| Akuiteo | Yes | `date_fin_contrat` |
| CSV / Excel import | Yes | `contractual_commitment_end_date` column of the template |
| Fincome public API | Yes | `contractual_commitment_end_date` |
| Stripe | No | no equivalent in the Stripe API (only start, cancellation and scheduled cancellation dates are retrieved) |
| Pennylane, ProAbono, NetSuite, Sellsy, Google Sheet, Bridge, bank imports, HubSpot, Salesforce | No | field not exposed by the source |
| Chargebee, legacy integration (v1) | No | field not retrieved by this connector |

| Good to know: CRM connectors (HubSpot, Salesforce) are used to enrich your customer data, not to carry subscription contract data. A commitment date entered in your CRM is therefore not sent to Fincome.

### The Chargebee case

Fincome takes `contract_term.contract_end` as is, without any reprocessing, whatever action is planned at term end (`action_at_term_end`: renew, evergreen, cancel). This date is the end of the contractual commitment of the current term, as defined by Chargebee.

Two consequences to keep in mind:

* **A subscription without a contract term has no commitment end date in Fincome**, even if a number of remaining billing cycles is set. That counter describes a scheduled end of the subscription, not a commitment: it is treated as an upcoming cancellation, not as a renewal.
* **An automatic renewal does not extend the commitment.** The commitment runs until the end of the current term. What happens next (tacit renewal, switch to evergreen) is a commercial assumption that Fincome does not model as a signed commitment.

### If your source doesn't send the date

Three ways to fill it in, depending on the number of subscriptions involved:

* **One by one**, directly on the subscription in Fincome (see [Manual edits in Fincome](https://help.fincome.co/en/article/manual-edits-in-fincome-how-it-works-17uq4t7/)).
* **In bulk**, via the `contractual_commitment_end_date` column of the import template (see [Prepare my file](https://help.fincome.co/en/article/prepare-my-file-65s5k8/)).
* **Automatically**, via the Fincome public API if your commitments are stored in a third-party tool (see [Enrich your billing data via API](https://help.fincome.co/en/article/enrich-your-billing-data-via-api-1hvruwt/)).

| Good to know: a missing commitment end date doesn't block anything. Fincome falls back on the end of the last billed period, and your subscription is still tracked. You only lose visibility beyond the next cycle.

### What this date drives

* The subscription's position in the **Renewals** chart: a 12-month committed contract appears at its actual due date, not every month.
* The **renewal date** shown on the customer page.
* The horizon over which the subscription's MRR is considered secured in projections, depending on your calculation options (see [Calculation of future MRR and future movements](https://help.fincome.co/en/article/calculation-of-future-mrr-and-future-movements-vjteps/)).

## Navigating to upcoming months

To view the renewals of the following months, click the arrow to the right of the date slider to move forward in time.

Keep in mind the logic described above: for a monthly subscription without a commitment end date, the renewal only appears in the month immediately following the last issued invoice. Once the current month's invoice is issued, the renewal moves to the next month, but it will not yet be visible two or three months further out. To project a renewal beyond that, fill in a commitment end date on the relevant subscriptions.

## Export your renewals

To get the list of your customers with their renewal date:

1. Open **Analytics**, then **Retention** > **Renewals**.
2. Click the arrow to the right of the date slider to display upcoming months.
3. Move the two handles of the slider to cover the period you need (for example from today to the end of next year).
4. If needed, choose the metric in the selector on the right (for example **All renewals (ARR)**) and apply your filters.
5. Click the **download icon** at the top right of the chart.

| Good to know: the Export center files (ARR by customer by month, MRR by customer by month…) don't include the renewal date. To get both in one file, match the renewals export and the ARR export in Excel on the customer ID (see [Data exports from Fincome](https://help.fincome.co/en/article/data-exports-from-fincome-1we1xcr/)).

## Breaking down and filtering your renewals

You can break down and filter the renewals view to focus your analysis on a specific subset (by segment, by subscription type or status, for example) rather than on your entire base. This is useful to isolate a high-stakes scope, prepare the renewals of a given segment, or track different categories of subscriptions separately.

## Customer example – HelloCSE

For HelloCSE, an HR platform with more than 4,000 customers, precise tracking of contract renewals was a key challenge. Relying on Fincome's Renewals tab, the Finance team was able to automate the monitoring of subscriptions coming due, avoid leaving revenue on the table, and identify customers to follow up with before the end of their commitment.

**Result**: significant time savings, an improved renewal rate, and better alignment of the CSM/Finance teams to prepare high-stakes renewals.

See the detailed benefits in [their testimonial](https://www.fincome.co/en/business-cases/cfo).

## FAQ

**Why don't I see all my renewals for the coming months at once?**
Because contracts without a commitment end date only project one month at a time: Fincome waits for a renewal to actually happen to model the next one. To see further into the future, fill in a commitment end date on the relevant subscriptions.

**Why does a past renewal appear as a churn?**
A renewal shown in a past month that was not validated (no new billing period started) is considered a churn.

**How do I get each customer's renewal date in a file?**
From Analytics > Retention > Renewals, set the slider on the upcoming months and click the download icon (see "Export your renewals" above). This date is not included in the Export center files.

**My contracts do have a commitment, why doesn't the date show up in Fincome?**
First check your billing source in the table above. Stripe, for example, doesn't expose any commitment end field: the data doesn't exist on the source side, so Fincome can't retrieve it. In that case, fill it in with a manual edit, an import or the API.

**A Chargebee subscription on automatic renewal shows no commitment end date, is that normal?**
Yes, if it has no contract term in Chargebee. Fincome only reads that field: without a defined contract term, there is no commitment to display, and the subscription is modeled on its billing period. If the contract term exists, its end date is used, including for subscriptions on automatic renewal.

**I entered the date manually and my billing tool also sends it. Which one is used?**
The value entered in Fincome. A manual edit always takes precedence over the sync, as long as the source data exists (see [Manual edits in Fincome](https://help.fincome.co/en/article/manual-edits-in-fincome-how-it-works-17uq4t7/)).
